When thinking how to invest one´s money, most people think about which stocks to buy, the hot tips of today and the potential stars of tomorrow. Less thought is put into building a robust portfolio, that will stand the test of time: changes in policy, changing economic conditions, emerging new technologies and deprecated business models can all have huge impacts on stock´s performances. There is no way of predicting the future. Instead of relying on luck, there are ways to improve your odds: the magic word is diversification. With this article, we try to give you the basic knowledge for creating a robust diversified portfolio.

We hereby proudly present version 0.5.2 of OTraSys, the Open Trading System Framework. This is a minor release, however since we forgot the announcing the v0.5.1 relase, the changelog is somewhat longer (and includes some major under-the-hood changes, especially with v0.5.1). Besides the usual minor improvements and the ongoing hunt for memory leaks, read on to find out about the most important features of both releases:

Can you make a living from trading? Do you want to quit your dayjob, exchange your office desk with your private desk at home and live from the profits you make from trading? If you believe thousands of youtube videos, blogs of successful daytraders and the omnipresent advertising of retail brokers (by the way: if it is omnipresent for you, the tailored online advertisement industry already knows a lot about you ;)) suggest that this is no big deal. And isn´t that the ultimate dream? Having the personal freedom to trade whenever, whereever you want to (and not to do so when you don't want). Lets approach the question with some cold and rational real world considerations. To state it upfront: all assumptions about the amount of money you make and how good a trader you are are just that- assumptions. We just present a train of thought and some tools- your mileage may vary. Feel free to adapt accordingly.

How are the actual prices for stocks determined? A trivial question at first glance, 95% would blurt out «Eeeeasy: demand and supply!». Well, not entirely false. But what exactly is the mechanism behind that? How does this exchange machine work under the hood? This is not only great knowledge for bragging at dinner parties, but an essential foundation for becoming a better trader. Knowing how stock prices are determined and what happens to orders after submission to your broker is important for your ability to pick the right tools from your toolchest. Read more to learn why (and incidentally learn why you want liquid markets).

OpenTradingSystem v0.5 released
We hereby proudly present version 0.5 of OTraSys, the Open Trading System Framework. This release marks a milestone for the software, for several reasons. The most obvious one being the new name. Since the software is now mature enough for productive testing, we changed the name to avoid possible problems due to the name conflict with another ip. Additionally, the old name was more of a joke that somehow stuck through development.
This release is a continuation from the complete under-the-hood overhaul that v0.4 brought. But aside some bug fixes and improved stability, also a couple of important features made it into the release:

Saturday evening, time to look back for last two weeks of action.
As usual the "market weather backcast" contains the ichimoku analysis of 22 indices, futures and FOREX pairs. The linked charts contain all the details and neccessary context. Both charts and tables are generated automatically, at the moment the software is still work in progress. As such, I am not sure if it works 100% correctly, so if you see a mistake, would like to see an addition/change or simply give feedback: feel free to mail me at
Last two weeks triggered 15 signals in 10 different markets (out of 22 in the investment universe):

If you would like to play around with the system that is used to generate the signals and charts on this blog, you can do so! The latest version of my software, ichinscratchy v0.3.0, was released in December 2017. It´s free & open source, you can find it under http://spare-time-trading.de/en/trading-system. Work on the next version (that will be a maintenance release) is progressing nicely. In fact I started using a development snapshot of the upcoming v0.4.0 to do this weekly analysis/overview as this part is already stable enough. You can check out the development activities at gitlab: https://gitlab.com/werwurm/ichi_reloaded.However, there is no release date yet. It´s done when it´s done...

It´s always the right time to quote Tolkien, especially when things get interesting. As I speculated last couple of weeks, this IS an interesting autumn...let´s try not get lost.

"He´s dead Jim!"
Is he? Major Indices at the moment do not look like they want to continue their uptrends much more... but if the patient really is dead remains to be seen. We might get some interesting end-of-year volatility- on both sides. In hindsight everyone is smarter...

"Winter is coming."
Autumn definitely has arrived. One can tell by two observations: Oktoberfest has started in Munich, and I am using the more gloomy high contrast charts again. Nights are getting longer, days colder. Time to read a good book, drink old whisky and return to coding a trading system...

"[...] But remember to come back in September!"
Well, a lot of people believe in seasonality and try to get their edge from that. However, I wouldn´t exacly call the few signals of last weeks an autumn rally- YET. Maybe next week.
